CLUB HISTORY
Team Mendip FC was set up in 2008 in Weston-super-Mare by James Lucas, Andy Stallard and Steve Drew, three dads who all had daughters, who wanted to play football.
The founding members had no experience in setting up a club or running girl’s football teams at all, but simply aimed to create an environment where the girls could safely play football. Open training sessions were set up in local recreational areas around Weston with their daughters and daughters friends, over the next six weeks the word spread and the sessions ballooned from just 9 girls to over 40 girls aged from 10 to 14 years old, all being coached together in one big session by James and assisted by Steve and Andy.
It was expected that one team may have been able to enter into the Somerset League, after contacting the Somerset FA and getting all the rules and regulations of running a club set up and with plenty of guidance from the FA Mendip Girls FC was formed and 3 girls teams aged U11′s, U12′s and U13′s were entered into the Bristol and Somerset Leagues.
The first season went very well with the U13′s only losing two games and finishing second in the Somerset League and making it to two summer tournament finals and winning one.
The following season more parents got involved and trained as FA Level one coaches. In 2010 Team Mendip achieved FA Charter Standard status showing the clubs commitment to ensuring the best standards for the players at the club.
Mendip had a set out a development plan for the club and has been working towards this from the start and so far is on target to achieve its goals, one of which was in the 2011-12 season Mendip set out to start up a Ladies team from scratch and through posters and word of mouth held a trial at Hutton Moor Sports Centre and got a great turnout of 26 girls aged 16 and over and also appointed a new Manager to run them, ex Bristol City Ladies Manager Jack Edgar a UEFA A License coach.
The Ladies team gained promotion in their second and fourth seasons from the Somerset County Women’s League 2nd and 1st divisions respectively and now play in the SOUTH WEST WOMEN’S LEAGUE. Weston Division.
Mendip has been recognized by the FA as one of the biggest all female clubs in the region, and changed its name from Mendip Girls FC to Team Mendip FC to incorporate the ladies aspect of the club. The Name Mendip was taken from Mendip Green 1st School in Worle as a thank you to Head Teacher Mr. Bruce Dale who was incredibly supportive allowing all the teams to train on the small playing field just big enough for a seven aside pitch on the school grounds.
As the Club continued to develop it was felt that a change of name was needed to link the club more firmly in its Weston-super-Mare roots and the club is now named Weston Mendip FC.
The Club is developing a solid base and exciting times are just round the corner for all the players, coaches, supporters and volunteers.
